CERTIFICATE NON-RESIDENT STATUS SPAIN

CERTIFICATE OF NON-RESIDENT STATUS SPAIN (C.N.R)

Dear clients and readers,

This weekly post concerns mainly those non-resident people. Both third-country nationals and EU citizens who drive their own car during a holiday in Spain.

As a foreigner with investments in Spain, it is advisable, especially if you have property and a car in Spain but are not a resident, to apply for a certificate that confirms your status as a non-resident foreigner in Spain.

WHEN WOULD IT BE ADVISABLE TO APPLY FOR THE C.N.R?

This certificate can be particularly useful, for example, if stopped by the civil guard or local police who question why you are driving your own Spanish-registered car on a UK licence.

This is why it is highly advisable NOT to be on the “Padrón” (in Spanish), even though many car salespeople will try to persuade you to register with the town hall if you buy a car. Remember that legally, only residents can be on the Padrón. Be careful with this, because if the police might stop you and check you have empadronamiento. They will assume you are a resident, with the potential risk of facing a fine.

PROCEDURE

So this is the process for applying for the certificate. It only lasts about 90 days (which is as long as you would be permitted to stay in one go anyway), and should be resolved in 5 days

Finally, it has to be done in person at either the Extranjería, or the National Police or at your Consulate if you are not currently in Spain.
